Geriatrics

For those age 65 and older, the Acadia Abilene Geriatric Program helps seniors and their families understand, and effectively cope with psychiatric conditions associated with aging. Our professional staff strives to provide the highest caliber of care to enhance the senior adult's quality of life.

Our primary goals for treatment are to:

  • provide a safe and secure environment,
  • diagnose the primary and underlying issues,
  • provide state-of-the-art treatment, and
  • develop a comprehensive aftercare program to ensure that therapy continues after discharge.

The treatment of aging related psychiatric issues primarily involves medication therapy. "Behind the scenes" of each day's activities will be a thoughtful, directed, and ceaseless effort by the treatment team to produce the most effective formula of state-of-the-art medications to help diminish presenting symptoms. Additionally, while Dementia is not an illness that can be treated in an inpatient psychiatric setting like Acadia Abilene, many secondary diagnoses and symptoms can. The staff is well-trained and highly accustomed to working with patients who have Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease as a secondary diagnosis.

At Acadia Abilene, we believe in a team-centered approach to care. Therefore, in addition to primary treatment by the attending physician, the patient will be treated by nursing, mental health technician, and case management staff. The treatment team will not only meet regularly with the patient, but also with family members to discuss the course of treatment, progress, and plan for discharge. In addition, families are free to call and inquire about their loved one at any time.
